Can't Mix For Shit Volume 2

Celebrating almost a 100 downloads on Volume 1, I'm following up with Can't Mix For Shit 2, which continues to erect a middle finger at diversity requirements. Some artists might be a little overrepresented *Cough*Lifelike*Cough*, but who cares when the tracks are this good!

Daft Punk vs Pointer Sisters - Underground (7UP Radio Mix)
A whitelabel edit I know absolutely nothing about...

Fleetwod Mac vs Lifelike - Never Forget So Electric (Cut Copy Fusion)
Fleetwod Mac is a long time favorite of mine, and as you're going to notice from the number of Lifelike appearances on this tape, he is a new one. This amazing fusion originally appeared on the So Cosmic mixtape by Cut Copy.

Deadelus - Make It So (XXXChange Remix)
This track has a downtempo feel to it, but at the same time packs a lot of energy and has spectacular bridges.

The Count & Sinden featuring Kid Sister - Beeper (A-Trak Remix)
I really like the original, but as with everything else A-Trak, this remix came out golden. That beeper sound is driving me nuts though, it sounds exactly like my doorbell.

The Presets - This Boy's In Love (Lifelike Remix)
To an even greater extent than the previous track, I find the original absolutely awesome. I even used the Kernkraft 400 remix in my previous tape. This is off the same promo and is just as fantastic, if not better.

UNKLE - Restless (Fake Blood Remix)
Fake Blood whips up some of the craziest stuff I've ever heard, and this track is completely nuts. It took me awhile before I figured it out, but now I loose the ability to sit still when I hear it.

Cut Copy - Lights & Music (Boys Noize Happy Birthday Mix)
I was planning on having this on the first volume but it never happened, and I'm still not tired of it. It's an awesome touchup of the original, and I feel it adds some of the dynamics I miss in general on the latest Cut Copy.

Lykke Li - I'm Good I'm Gone (Fred Falke Remix)
I was quite excited about this remix and it's always a great feeling when you're expectations are met. Fred Falke adds some beautiful melodic touches to one of Lykke Li's best songs.

Estelle featuring Kanye West - American Boy (Stockholm Syndrome Official Remix)
This track packs a great summer vibe and has infinite potential for becoming a dancefloor hit this year.

Petter - Goda Dagars Magi (Jeansie Blend)
Jeansbjörn blends swedish rapper Petter with Madonna's Holiday, creating an upbeat and funny vibe, which you should be able to dance drunkenly to.

Cazals - Somebody Somewhere (Lifelike Remix)
Another one of his magical touchups, I have to see this guy play sometime.

Trip - Who's That (Jack Beats Remix)
If I'm not mistaken Plus One is 50% of Jack Beats and largely responsible for the insane dubbed out twist this track takes.

Boys Noize - Oh! (A-Trak Remix)
Very weird but insanely cool. Boys Noize + A-Trak = nuff said.

Teyana Taylor - Google Me (Konjoined Remix)
Another one those summervibe tracks. The way this 16 year old sounds over the Konjoined remix is soooo much better than the original.

Cole Medina - Red Hot / Tron Scott's Freaks in Space - Prog Rocks And Moon Jocks
I yanked this puppy out from Todd Terjes Resident Advisor podcast, and have pretty much been unable to find out anything about it. The cutout spans over two or three tracks, and I'm confused as to what's what, but those lyrics sound so damn tight over that beat I couldn't help myself putting the whole thing on.

KITSUNE077: The Cazals - Somebody Somewhere

Kitsuné never stops delivering. This time it's The Cazals and their single from upcoming What Of Our Future (due May 19) that's bringing the funk. But what makes this gem sparkle is Lifelike's fantastic remix.

Download: Cazals - Somebody Somewhere (Lifelike Remix)

Stockholm Syndrome

It's been quiet around here for the last week due to the fact that I'm wrapping up my bachelors degree and school is kind of crazy.

I tried to catch up with my reader the other day and Stockholm Syndrome is something that deserves mentioning, even though I really don't have time for blogging.

If their American Boy remix doesn't end up being a summer favorite, something is seriously wrong somewhere.

They also did a fantastic "Mixing it up" session for Discobelle which is worth getting your hands on!

I will be keeping my eye out for anything these guys do in the future.

Three 6 Mafia - I'd Rather

I wasn't feeling this initially, but today I woke today with this ringing in my head and I can't seem to shake it.

Scandinavian Hip Hop Invasion

So I caught up with this mixtape today, which is a serious collection of Scandinavian artists who has been holding it down for quite some time.

Well, at least some longer than others, the exception being Junior Natural who is representing the Reggae part of the tape. Which is sort of, ehh, weird, seeing as he's a) thirteen years old b) white and c) from Uppsala. I know what you might be thinking, but keep in mind that the Swedes have a knack for Reggae. This kid is more than just a novelty feature, check out his MySpace for some tracks

Busy Swedes: New Looptroop and new Chords

Chords is out with a new album: Things We Do For Things
Personal note: That Places To Go track is fan-tastic!

Looptroop reappears in their new shape Looproop Rockers, after CosMIC apparently left to take care of the crew's website..? Anyway Good Things is available at iTunes

Also as a couple of bonuses, previously mentioned Henok Achido's single Can I is also available in iTunes, and Promoes contribution to Diversidad along with Akhenaton, Noora Noor and others is live over at YouTube. The conclusion of April truly was a great time for Swedish hiphop.

The Kooks

For some reason I never sat down and listened to The Kooks, but tonight through random events I ended up playing their latest album, and I'm totally blown away. I have to get more of their stuff. And there's more to it, this actually made me settle on a festival this summer: Hove here I come!

It's about time this track got a video!

Blogoverse update

Here's a couple of interesting interviews and mixes I found floating around in the blogosphere (yes, I'm trying out some new nerd-nouns)

Cosmic Disco: MP3 blogs. Good or bad?

Mike Simonetti: I like them. I think it’s a good way to spread the word about new music and open people’s eyes to stuff. As I’ve said before, I’m not against giving music away free on blogs. I think it can only be a good thing.

Cosmic Disco interviews the Italians Do it Better labelhead Mike Simonetti (ie. the label responsible for the After Dark compilation, Glass Candy and Chromatics). Get the mix he's done in the bottom as well!

When I record a track, I always think: "Would I like to listen to it and dance?" This is the way I like music, I want it to make me feel good

Fred Falke reveals to Asian Dan that he has just finished a remix for Lykke Li and will be working on a solo album.

Just like they're supposed to, those Norwegian vikings stormed in and took over the show last night! Really proud to have these guys on. I wasn't planning on airing them on the same night, but it just ended up working out that way and sounds great. Please check them out!

Weblog Oh Baby, I Like it Raw led me to the Norwegian takeover at Beats In Space spearheaded by Strangefruit and Todd Terje.

Another Late Night Tale

I remember when I first got my hands on the now classic series from Azuli. Aah, what a beautiful moment. The Rae & Christian (RIP Grand Central) compilation was my favorite for a long time, and as I'm writing this I'm inspired to ruffle through my old CDs and put it on again.

Back when it was called Another Late Night, Groove Armada relased the fifth installment in the series. Now the name has changed and The Armada returns for a second time with the 20th release of the mixtapes which now bears the name Late Night Tales. It might not be the most original thing to cast the same artist twice in a series, but GA prooves themselves worthy with this fantastic collection of tracks. And I'm so relieved to see that this great line of compilations continues to provide quality of this level.

As someone (can't remember who) eloquently put it: "Late Night Tales is about songs you've already heard and forgotten about, which you'll be delighted to hear again... and again." And that's exactly what this album represents for me - with a dash of new - courtesy of Groove Armada's gentle edits. The fabolous Wizards Sleeve Remix of Midlake - Roscoe and the soulful experience of Ace - How Long are tracks which never should be forgotten. Listen to it with mom and sit through the french version of Chris Rea - Josephine so she'll be able to impress you and say: "I know this song." - even though she really doesn't. Get your 80s groove on with Roxy Music's Love Is The Drug or fall asleep to the subliminal beats of African Dreams - Make A Living. Either way, this record is golden!

Tracklist:
01 - Human League - Things That Dreams Are Made Of
02 - Roxy Music - Love Is The Drug
03 - Kitty Grant - Glad To Know You
04 - Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence
05 - Max Berlin - Elle Et Moi (Joakim remix)
06 - African Dreams - Make A Living
07 - Midlake - Roscoe (Wizards' Sleeve remix)
08 - Electronic - Electronic
09 - Liquid People - Son Of Dragon
10 - Ace - How Long
11 - Chris Rea - Josephine (Le Version Francaise)
12 - Will Young - Fridays Child (Andy Cato edit)
13 - Marvin Gaye & Tami Tyrell - You're All I Need To Get By
14 - Groove Armada - Are Friends Electric (Exclusive Gary Numan Cover)
15 - Peter Bjorn & John - The Chills
16 - The Cure - Close To Me
17 - Finley Quaye - Even After All (Burning dub)
18 - Will Self - Story part 1 of 4

Fabriclove

London nightclub/label Fabric has been responsible for so many great mixtapes I lost count what feels like years ago. Browsing through their catalogue should make any musicappreciator more than excited. Flipping through the records proves to be a journey through many music styles represented by legendary DJs which are all famous for it's own unique thing. Let the namedropping begin: Cut Copy, LCD Soundsystem, Spank Rock (probably my favorite along with their bootleg version Fabricdead), Diplo, The Herbaliser, Aim, Spinbad, Jacques Le Cont, Scratch Perverts, Krafty Kuts and sooo many more.

While this month they added another of my favorites to their repertoire. UK Cut'n'paste guru DJ Yoda puts together another wildly entertaining mixtape. If you're not familiar with his sound, jump to his MySpace page and listen to the Annie Mac Mini Mix, it basicly explains his thing in 5 minutes.

On the Fabriclive 39 mix, Yoda fuses rap, dub, d&b, indie, soul and about anything with his own little twists and turns, which always tends to give the original songs (he so masterly selects) new life and sounding danceable again. Great examples are Skibadee - Tic Toc and Gang Starr - Just To Get A Rep which are touched up Yoda style. Throw in the amazing Marvin Gaye cover of Sexual Healing by The Hot 8 Brass Band and you start to get a feel for what I mean.

Tracklist:
01 - The Thunderclaps - Judgement Day (Donkey Work Re-Edit)
02 - Violent Femmes - Blister In The Sun
03 - Skibadee - Tika Toc
04 - Handsome Boy Modeling School - Holy Calamity (Bear Witness II)
05 - Ice Cube - Jackin' For Beats (Explicit)
06 - Ghost - It's All Love
07 - Jurassic 5 - Swing Set
08 - The Hot 8 Brass Band - Sexual Healing
09 - D Nice - Crumbs On The Table
10 - Gang Starr - Just To Get A Rep (Explicit)
11 - Jean Jacques Perry & DJ Yoda & Herve - EVA (Bonus Beats)
12 - The Chemical Brothers - Salmon Dance (Explicit)
13 - The Coral - In The Morning
14 - Bell Biv Devoe & Tittsworth - Poison (Bonus Beats)
15 - Run DMC - It's Tricky
16 - Salt N Pepa - Push It
17 - DJ Class - Tear Da Club Up
18 - Bonde Do Role - Marina Gasolina
19 - Minnie Ripperton - Loving You (Bamabounce Bonus Beats)
20 - Come Around - Collie Buddz
21 - Chatterbox - DJ Yoda ft Sway
22 - Adam F - Circles (Original)
23 - DJ Zinc - Super Sharp Shooter
24 - Wiley & Skream - Gangsters (Make Me)
25 - Lord Kitchener - London Is The Place For Me

And while we're on the subject of Fabric, next month will feature yet another favorite of mine. King of Mushroom Jazz, Mark Farina is mixing up some laidback lofi for Fabric 40.

I previewed the set, and fans of of the Chicago/SF DJ will not be disappointed. Yet another splendid addition to vault of beautiful music compiled by Fabric.

“When making the mix, I played a sort of fictitious set at fabric on a night that doesn't exist. Musically, I tried to capture the techy, jackin' Chicago/SF side of the house spectrum - dubby, chunky tracks. I tried to pick tunes from all over the world. I picked a good variation of underground goodies, a lot of which are unreleased or hopefully not on any other compilations. Tracks that have a good "shelf life" but that aren't proven hits; hidden gems that might go over looked in this fast paced music era.”
- Mark Farina

Tracklist:
01 - Giom – Together
02 - Chuck Love – Yellow Truth (Atnarko Mix)
03 - JT Donaldson & Uneaq – Why Not Rock?

Can't Mix For Shit

..like the title says: this is my first attempt at mixing something live, and lord knows I'm messing up all over the place, but that doesn't mean I didn't have fun doing it! :)

Anyway I got my hands on so many good tracks lately, I thought I'd try and have some fun with them, and that's what this is about. It's a great collection of mostly new electronic music which belongs in the dancefloor/workout category. I'm not saying you'll enjoy my lack of mixing skills, but these songs should get you dancing, unless you have a legitimate excuse (read: you're a douche!)

Tracklist:

Familjen - Huvudet I Sanden (Tomi Kiiosk Remikksi)
Yelle - A Cause De Garçons (Tepr Remix)
Superfunk - Electric
Hercules & Love Affair - Blind (Frankie Knuckles Remix)
The Whitest Boy Alive - Golden Cage (Fred Falke Remix)
Simian vs The Cardigans - Never Be Alone In Aerius Light (ElectroSound Mashup)
Simian Mobile Disco - Hustler (Club Edit)
Justice - Waters Of Nazareth

Paper Route Gangstaz

Rap and Robert Miles? Sounds like the cheesiest of the cheesy. If anyone could pull it off it would be Diplo. These guys seem to pop up everywhere I look these days. The mixtape is supposed to drop in April, meanwhile give thei sampler a listen, lots of interesting samples and a well put together mix:

Sounds from Stankonia

There's a mp3 floating around the net of what presumably is the new single from Big Boi, featuring Andre 3000 & Raekwon. The quality sucks, but anything for a whif of some new stank, right?

Update, better quality: Big Boi ft Andre 3000 & Raekwon - Royal Flush

Where did all the music go? Blogging for the mountain

As some of you might have noticed, there's been somewhat less new posts regarding music the last couple of weeks. And there's two reasons for that, I've been extremely busy drinking studying, and I've started blogging for Slottsfjell Festival, which in effect has stolen some of the music related content from this site.

You can check out that blog here, where I'm doing my best to kill the seriousness and take over the world with my popular culture references. I've written about sneakpeaks on both Bun B and Cut Copy's new albums, the indie record Oslo! which is about to drop and some cool new music videos for March.

Mixtapes the new old fashion way

This product would actually make giving away music somewhat fun again. But 64mb? Come on...

Edit: Or loose the physical aspect and head on over to Mixwit.com or Muxtape.com
