1.1.3 Fully unlocked

iPhone hacker slash God GeoHot has found an exploit that allows for a full software unlock for the iPhone's latest firmware. While the firmware has been available to hacked iPhone users for some time, this has required an extra sim card (TurboSim, HyperCard or similar) for people who bought their phones with firmware 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 already installed (due to a difference in the bootloader (v3.9 vs v4.6)).

So what does this mean? iPhone hacking just got a little easier, and definitely cheaper, which means you should see a pricedrop in prehacked iPhones. X-cards just got outdated (at least until the next roadbarrier introduced by Apple) and people should be able to use Apples latest baseband on their phones, enabling all the current features and eliminating some of the fear related to hacking the device. And yes, the hack also works on the new 16GB model.

Still not getting it? If you want one, go buy one. Now is the time!

(Pretend) viral marketing

If you didn't catch it, it's a commercial, for a videogame, which means that this unfortunately is another one of those sneaky commercials which wants you to question whether it's real or not. Like the old Ronaldinho commercial and the slightly less credible Michael Vick and Lebron James Powerade commercials.

Nevertheless it makes for some saucy marketing which guarantees watercooler time. The interesting part is this clip which actually documents how they made the Ronaldinho clip:

1.1.3

Nytt:
- Du kan rearrangere Springboard selv
- Hybridview, Drop Pin og Locate Me i Google Maps
- Sende tekstmeldinger til flere samtidig
- Webclips

Do the D.A.N.C.E. O.S.L.O.

Here's another Justice remix for you to enjoy while you're waiting for Saturday. Unfortunately I'm out of the country so I'm missing out on what I expect will be the most danceworthy night of 2008. Have fun!

Mick Boogie Presents Jay-Z & Marvin Gaye - Brooklyn Soul

Free music isn't something you should expect lesser of in terms of quality, compared to music you have to pay for. This is something Mick Boogie's latest venture entitled "Brooklyn Soul" is evidence of. This is basicly a mashup of the a cappellas from Jay-Z's "American Gangster" and beats chopped from old Marvin Gaye songs. Imho the beats on the latest Jay-Z was mediocre at best, and as Marvin has been a big part of my life since forever, this album combines two elements I love and wraps them up in a great package. Professionally executed and well sounding, this is well worth the free download.

Check out Hello Brooklyn which has a Sexual Healing sample and in addition to Jay-Z, Lil Wayne on the hook. The latter which apparently is making a stopover in Oslo around the ninth or thirteenth of March. I'm treating this as nothing more than a rumour (the guy has already cancelled once), but Universal has supposedly confirmed it, but the venue, Sentrum Scene, is not reporting on anything yet. Fingers crossed!

Another one bites the dust

Music blog Nodatta was recently taken down in a move by the RIAA to close down some of the more popular blogs that distribute copyrighted material.

Ironically Nodatta, which was known for offering up rather obscure music - via filehosting services such as RapidShare and Megaupload - was taken down (the rumours has it) for posting a leaked advance copy of the new Mars Volta album. The interesting part about it is analyzing the two factors involved that made the RIAA take action.

The first and obvious reason is that The Mars Volta is released on a label represented by the RIAA. I can't help but seeing the humor in the steps "enthusiasts" are taking, in developing sites such as http://riaaradar.com, which is a database meant to warn you if an album/artist/song is maintained by RIAA interests.

The second reason is supposedly that RIAA focuses on eliminating distribution networks that release material which has yet to hit the shelves. Seems to me as two perfectly good reasons, and to give the much hated RIAA some credit, this seems only fair. Nevertheless, Nodatta will be missed, not so much for it's downloadable content, but for it's genuine talent to provide new, original and at last but not least, fantastic music. It rivaled most of the traditional sites I use to learn about new music (I'm looking at you overrated-Pitchfork).

It's not my place to condemn the actions of copyright holders in these cases, but I can't help but pausing and reflecting on the hundreds of comments on the now empty Nodatta blog, which has shocked users exclaim that they've bought alot of music by bands they've never had heard of if it wasn't for the blog.

Quite the dilemma...

Chromatics - Night Drive

Not my favorite track from their 2007 album. Nevertheless, this album is pure gold, and a relaxation helper. My favorite tracks "I Want Your Love" and "Night Drive" are my new remedy for sleepless nights. It's hard to compare them to other bands, but it has the same ethereal feel like old nineties bands, such as Slowdive and The Cranes. Also interesting is the Kate Bush "Running Up That Hill" cover, which is just as good as the Placebo version.
